Village Educational Garden

The Village Educational Garden – Sustainable Backyard is a demonstration garden that has been designed to illustrate sustainable principles and show some of the ways in which a typical suburban backyard can be transformed into a productive and edible landscape.

It features; various sustainable gardening techniques, native/fruit trees, herb/vegetable gardens, beehive, worm farms, composting, propagation, water saving techniques, pizza oven and various educational resources.

In the Sustainable Backyard you will see examples of sustainable garden design:

• Most available space is used – including vertical space
• Nutrients are recycled and replaced using compost and green manure.
• Waste is used as a resource
• A wide range of annual and perennial plants are grown to produce a year round food supply
• Vegetable beds are designed for effective crop rotation
• Bees, worms and insects are a key part of the garden
• Recycled and sustainable materials are used wherever possible to save money and reduce waste
• Each system imitates a natural system

Workshops
VEG offers a number of workshops throughout the year, also in conjunction with various likeminded groups, individuals, EIT and GDC. Some of these include; worm farming, composting and bokashi, backyard bee keeping, willow weaving, fruit tree pruning, oil infusion, growing micro greens, various garden related …and many more – please see calendar

Collaboration
TEC Collaborates with the EIT Sustainable Horticulture department to create a model garden that demonstrates sustainable techniques, for growing food and other sustainable backyard examples that people can use at home.
